About the Town of Occidental

A Hidden Gem of Sonoma County

Tucked into a lush redwood valley just minutes from the Pacific Coast, the village of Occidental is one of Sonoma County’s most enchanting small towns—equal parts quirky, artistic, and historic. Originally founded in 1876 as a stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad, Occidental retains its old-world charm, with two-blocks of rustic storefronts, family-run Italian restaurants, and artisan shops that invite leisurely strolling.

Visitors can explore the town’s colorful past with the Historical and Anecdotal Walking Tour of Occidental, browse local galleries and boutiques like Hand Goods and Galleria, or visit on a concert weekend to experience performances by the Redwood Arts Council or Occidental Community Choir.

Today, Occidental remains a creative hub for artists, chefs, and winemakers who celebrate the area’s natural beauty and community spirit. It’s the kind of place where everyone waves, the scent of wood smoke mingles with the coastal breeze, and time seems to slow just enough to remind you what matters most.

Sonoma County is the quintessential wine country — sophistication and class without the attitude and crowds.
