Sonoma County has no shortage of charm, and that goes double when you’re traveling with a four-legged friend. Dog-friendly places fill our region, making it easy to plan a getaway you’ll both enjoy. Wineries, hiking trails, local parks, and even restaurants here are more than happy to welcome wagging tails.
You might be sipping wine on a sun-drenched patio or heading for a peaceful morning walk through the redwoods. There’s always something to sniff out and explore. The best part is that you don’t have to leave your pup behind to enjoy it all.
We’ve rounded up some of our favorite spots that roll out the red carpet for humans and their furry companions. So grab the leash, load up the car, and get ready to make some memories — paws and all.
Stay at the Inn at Occidental
At the Inn at Occidental, we believe getaways are better with furry companions. As one of the most dog-friendly places in Sonoma County, we welcome pups with open arms and maybe a treat or two.
Our dog-friendly rooms offer easy access to nearby walking spots, and our garden setting gives people and pets space to relax. Guests love lounging on the porch while their pups enjoy the fresh air. We’re here to ensure tails wag and everyone feels right at home.
Walk the West County Trail
The West County Trail is one of those dog-friendly trails that feels more like a rare find. This 5.5-mile path is mostly paved and links Sebastopol, Graton, and Forestville, offering views of farms, pastures, and vineyards. The trail is separated from Highway 116, providing a peaceful experience away from traffic.
Take a short stroll or a longer walk to burn off your pup’s energy. It’s a mostly paved and shaded route that ensures comfort throughout the year. And we often recommend it to guests looking for an easy, scenic outing with their dogs.
Play at Ragle Ranch Park
Ragle Ranch Regional Park in Sebastopol is a favorite among dog lovers. The 157-acre park features an off-leash dog park with open space and a small agility course.
Smaller pups can enjoy designated “Small Dog Hours” daily, reserving the park during these times for dogs weighing 30 lbs and under.
Beyond the dog park, leashed dogs can join you on over 3 miles of unpaved trails that wind through oak groves and along Atascadero Creek. Picnic areas, sports fields, and a peaceful garden make it an excellent spot for outdoor fun with your furry friend.
Relax at Sandy Beach
Guests love Sandy Beach in Healdsburg when they’re looking for a peaceful spot to unwind with their pups. This dog-friendly stretch along the Russian River welcomes leashed dogs. It offers a quiet, natural setting for a riverside picnic or a lazy afternoon in the sun. The calm water and soft sand make it a relaxing place to dip your toes — or paws — into the river.
Please note that not all areas of Sandy Beach are open to dogs. Leashed dogs are allowed on the west side of the bridge crossing the Russian River. Be sure to keep your pup on a leash and clean up after them.
There are no lifeguards or amenities, so bring your own supplies, water, and waste bags. This simple, scenic spot is perfect for travelers who prefer a slower pace and fewer crowds.
Dine at Howard Station Cafe
We love and recommend Howard Station Cafe in downtown Occidental. It’s one of those dog-friendly places where you and your pup can enjoy a delicious breakfast or lunch together — they have a dog-friendly menu.
The ‘human’ menu offers a variety of dishes, including vegetarian and vegan options. Some popular choices among our guests include:
- Smoked Salmon Florentine Omelet
- Blueberry or Banana-Walnut Pancakes
- Huevos Rancheros
- Regular and Vegan French Toast
This local hot spot is open for breakfast and lunch daily, and you and your furry friend will enjoy a visit.
Hike Riverfront Regional Park
Riverfront Regional Park in Healdsburg is one of our favorite dog-friendly places for a peaceful hike. Just a short drive from the Inn, this scenic spot offers gentle trails, redwood groves, and plenty of lake views.
The 2.18-mile Lake Trail loops around Lake Benoist, and provides a flat, shaded path perfect for a leisurely walk. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the park, and amenities like restrooms and picnic areas make spending a relaxed afternoon here easy.
Explore Bodega Bay Trails
Bodega Bay has some of the most scenic hiking trails in California, perfect for a coastal adventure with your leashed pup. Check out the Bird Walk Coastal Access Trail. It’s a gentle 1.19-mile loop through wetlands and along the harbor. Bring your binoculars.
Doran Beach Trail is another great option. Along this flat 3.8-mile out-and-back path, you can enjoy ocean views and the sea breeze.
These trails are part of the area’s dog-friendly offerings, providing memorable experiences for you both.
